How do you get people to share information with each other? I recently interviewed Rebecca Hunter, former Commissioner of the State of Tennessee Department of Human Resources. She said that people often don’t share information simply because they don’t think about it. I have observed the same thing, especially with how busy everyone is. Here is a simple question from Commissioner Hunter to infuse a spirit of information sharing:
Who else needs to know what you know?
If you are a leader, use this question liberally. Not judgmentally or with a hidden agenda, just a simple question. In your one-on-ones with people, in your team meetings, ask the question: who else needs to know what you know?
Simple. And over time it will get people thinking about with whom they need to share information.
Now go build a #strongteam!
